In 1942, during World War II, Grandmaster Robert A. Trias was stationed in the British Solomon Islands. At this time Grandmaster Trias was a middleweight boxing champion for the United States Navy. During this same time a Chinese missionary, Master T'ung Gee Hsing, was seeking the conversion of the Solomon Island natives. After observing Grandmaster Trias training for an upcoming boxing match, Master Hsing offered to teach him Hsing-Yi in exchange for lessons in "American Boxing". At first Grandmaster Trias refused, annoyed by the interruptions during a busy training schedule. Finally, Grandmaster Trias decided to teach Hsing a lesson in the ring. The exchange that followed was a turning point for Grandmaster Trias, who was unable to land a single blow. He Decided to pursue the art so generously offered to him by Master Hsing. From then on, Karate became his way of life.
Later during the war, in 1944, while stationed in Singapore, Mr. Trias continued his training in the Martial Arts with his second instructor Hoy Yuan Ping at the Hock Keng Temple. Hoy Yuan Ping's instructor was Hashinosuka Fukuda, of the Tenshin Shinjo School of Kempo Ju-Jitsu in Japan.
Karate was first introduced to the Untired States by Grandmaster Trias in 1945, He opened the first Karate school in the nation in 1946 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Hanshi Pachivas began teaching Karate to the general public in the early 1950's and is the father of Karate in Florida. Traditional Karate grew under his leadership. He supported the growth of authentic Karate and promoted many tournaments that were the steppingstone for Florida Karate-Ka to gain national prominence.
During Hanshi Pachivas's competition days he was feared for his speed and power. Usually fighting from a cat stance, he could use both roundhouse and front kicks and his incredible hand speed. In 1963 Grandmaster Robert Trias invited him to the Hombu Dojo in Phoenix, Arizona. This was the beginning of a special relationship that would last for the next 25 years. Hanshi Pachivas is one of just a dew to be personally chosen by O'Sensei Trias to be a member of the Trias International Society.
Under Grandmaster Trias, Hanshi Pachivas received the highest title within the organization. He was a Chef Instructor and was Director of the United States Karate Association International. Hanshi Pachivas Helds a 5th Degree in Judo and in Jujitsu.
Hanshi Pachivas provided training of authentic Karate and sport Karate for over 40 years. He was concerned with the total development of the individual. He conseled many Karate-Ka on prejudice and doing your best is the real winning.
Hanshi Pachivas believed that Karate develops character and integrity and provided the insight for success in life. He reminds us that hard physical training never stops.
Hanshi Donna Judge began her Karate career in 1973 and is the senior instructor of the Suncoast Karate Dojo in Sarasota, Florida. She opened her first dojo in 1976.
She was a student under Hanshi John Pachivas and is Shihan Schroeder's instructor. Hanshi Judge has devoted herself shole heartedly to training and sharing her kararte knowledge, making her an invaluable link to the Karate-Do you train.
Currently, Hanshi Donna Judge is a 9th Degree in Shuri Ryu Karatedo. She also holds the title of . Assistant Chief Instructor of Shuri Ryu Karete-Do
Sensei Stephen Schroeder, is a 6th degree blackbelt and has been teaching karate for 38 years. He has also been teaching students with disabilities (ESE) in VCS schools for 28 years. Sensei Schroeder specializes in student mental, physical, and character development while creating an atmosphere that is fun and energizing.
